00:00:42:16 - 00:00:47:12
Welcome to another episode of the Style
and Strategy podcast.
00:00:47:12 - 00:00:55:00
Today, I'm diving into a bit of a topic
that I know I hear time and time again
00:00:55:00 - 00:00:57:03
from many clients.
00:00:57:03 - 00:01:00:15
And it's really on that area of trying,
when you're getting dressed, trying to
00:01:00:15 - 00:01:02:23
And it's really on that area of trying,
when you're getting dressed, trying to
00:01:02:23 - 00:01:06:13
feel like you're not trying too hard,
really.
00:01:06:13 - 00:01:12:09
And for those of us kind of over the 40
mark or over there at 35 mark, you're kind
00:01:12:09 - 00:01:17:20
of looking back and thinking, wow, can I
get away with wearing that?
00:01:17:20 - 00:01:20:09
Or maybe I can't.
00:01:20:09 - 00:01:22:22
And I hear it a lot.
00:01:22:22 - 00:01:31:00
Sometimes they might say things like,
please, I don't know what to do and I
00:01:31:00 - 00:01:35:20
don't want to be seen as mutton dressed up
as lamb to use a colloquialism.
00:01:35:22 - 00:01:37:09
around it.
00:01:37:09 - 00:01:44:08
So I'm wondering whether many of you also
have had that sort of thought cross your
00:01:44:08 - 00:01:45:13
mind.
00:01:45:17 - 00:01:53:06
So if you are and you're finding it hard
to get that balance between, I really
00:01:53:06 - 00:01:56:01
don't want to look like I'm trying too
hard and I kind of want it to look
00:01:56:01 - 00:01:57:05
natural.
00:01:57:05 - 00:01:59:18
What I sometimes find is one of the
following things starts to happen.
00:01:59:18 - 00:02:00:20
What I sometimes find is one of the
following things starts to happen.
00:02:00:20 - 00:02:04:08
What I sometimes find is one of the
following things starts to happen.
00:02:04:18 - 00:02:09:20
So your style might've evolved over a
period of time.
00:02:09:20 - 00:02:15:15
And the thing that's happening is you've
started to notice because you're shopping
00:02:15:15 - 00:02:20:06
in the same stores that you were maybe
five, 10 years ago.
00:02:20:06 - 00:02:26:07
And that's okay if they're catering to
your style needs.
00:02:26:07 - 00:02:26:11
But if they aren't any longer because
they're no longer keeping up with our
00:02:26:11 - 00:02:32:03
But if they aren't any longer because
they're no longer keeping up with our
00:02:32:03 - 00:02:33:14
changing tastes.
00:02:33:14 - 00:02:35:10
sort of needs.
00:02:35:18 - 00:02:40:22
It seems like the default and it's much
easier to stick with what we know and
00:02:40:22 - 00:02:42:20
hence why you keep going back there.
00:02:42:20 - 00:02:49:14
But that can really leave us feeling
completely uninspired and out of sync with
00:02:49:14 - 00:02:52:06
who we are now.
00:02:52:13 - 00:02:58:22
Another thing that might be happening is
you might be swinging between sort of
00:02:58:22 - 00:03:02:22
these conservative looks and
00:03:02:22 - 00:03:10:08
brands that you know are more conservative
just to try to find this balance of trying
00:03:10:08 - 00:03:16:07
to be appropriately dressed but still not
looking like you're trying too hard.
00:03:16:09 - 00:03:20:02
And then really hoping to strike the right
note.
00:03:20:02 - 00:03:25:06
But again, that can often lead to a
wardrobe that might feel a little bit
00:03:25:06 - 00:03:30:18
disjointed and maybe doesn't quite
represent who you are anymore.
00:03:30:18 - 00:03:35:13
So the other thing that might be happening
is you might be avoiding experimenting
00:03:35:13 - 00:03:41:02
with new styles because you're starting to
feel like, if I go down that path, I'm
00:03:41:02 - 00:03:43:20
going to look a little bit out of place.
00:03:43:20 - 00:03:46:13
And so maybe it's best if I don't even
try.
00:03:46:19 - 00:03:49:13
And so this one's quite big.
00:03:49:13 - 00:03:59:04
That fear of stepping out of our comfort
zone, even if that comfort zone is you
00:03:59:04 - 00:04:06:01
being stuck in a rut, a style rut, and
wearing those same outfits over and over
00:04:06:01 - 00:04:12:09
again that really don't excite us any
more, then...
00:04:12:10 - 00:04:17:16
that can really cause some issues down the
track.
00:04:17:16 - 00:04:21:07
Because if one of those three items, does
that sound familiar, perhaps to some of
00:04:21:07 - 00:04:23:03
the things that are popping up for you?
00:04:23:03 - 00:04:28:14
Because if you are doing one of these
things, then I bet...
00:04:28:14 - 00:04:33:03
it's really starting to contribute to some
of the style challenges that you might be
00:04:33:03 - 00:04:33:23
having.
00:04:34:15 - 00:04:37:21
And if I'm right, don't worry.
00:04:37:21 - 00:04:42:03
I've got some tips for you now in this
episode to help you really, you know,
00:04:42:06 - 00:04:47:15
crush through that and challenge those
patterns and really dress in a way that
00:04:47:15 - 00:04:53:06
allows you to feel, yeah, I'm appropriate
and I'm comfortable and I'm still put
00:04:53:06 - 00:04:56:18
together without looking over done.
00:04:57:02 - 00:04:59:23
So who's up for hearing some of those
tips?
00:04:59:23 - 00:05:01:07
So who's up for hearing some of those
tips?
00:05:01:07 - 00:05:01:17
Okay.
00:05:01:17 - 00:05:02:15
So tip.
00:05:02:15 - 00:05:11:09
One is thinking about how you actually go
about diversifying your shopping habits.
00:05:11:12 - 00:05:18:22
So really starting to open your mind to
explore new stores that might cater for
00:05:18:22 - 00:05:22:03
your different style and your different
changing needs.
00:05:22:03 - 00:05:28:08
So if you start to look for different
brands that might offer similar pieces
00:05:28:08 - 00:05:30:14
that resonate with you,
00:05:30:14 - 00:05:32:15
but feel a little bit more fresh.
00:05:32:15 - 00:05:35:00
There's an injection of freshness to them.
00:05:35:00 - 00:05:37:13
So they feel a bit more timeless.
00:05:37:16 - 00:05:43:21
And don't be afraid to venture into those
boutiques or online stores you've never
00:05:43:21 - 00:05:49:10
tried before, because you might actually
be surprised what you might find.
00:05:49:10 - 00:05:53:05
And I know it sounds a little bit nerve
wracking to think about,
00:05:53:05 - 00:05:55:01
And I know it sounds a little bit nerve
wracking to think about,
00:05:55:20 - 00:05:58:05
to go and find new stores and really try
to experiment.
00:05:58:05 - 00:05:59:15
to go and find new stores and really try
to experiment.
00:05:59:15 - 00:06:05:01
It does take a little bit of time, but
trust me, in the long run, you will be
00:06:05:01 - 00:06:06:05
grateful for it.
00:06:06:05 - 00:06:10:14
Because even though you might have to try
a few different things on or maybe, you
00:06:10:14 - 00:06:15:14
know, try and return a few things just to
get into a bit of a rhythm around
00:06:15:14 - 00:06:16:04
know, try and return a few things just to
get into a bit of a rhythm around
00:06:16:04 - 00:06:21:10
understanding how that brand really fits
you, then you might be surprised that you
00:06:21:10 - 00:06:24:06
might find something that is just amazing.
00:06:24:06 - 00:06:27:16
and more different from what you've had
potentially before.
00:06:28:12 - 00:06:35:05
The second tip I've got is I want you to
start to see if we can find your sweet
00:06:35:05 - 00:06:39:00
spot between conservative and stylish.
00:06:39:12 - 00:06:45:03
So conservative, stylish, elevated, those
kind of three kind of might go hand in
00:06:45:03 - 00:06:45:09
hand.
00:06:45:09 - 00:06:47:22
It really depends on what your style is.
00:06:47:22 - 00:06:51:20
It's not really about swinging to either
extremes.
00:06:51:20 - 00:06:57:12
but it's about really trying to integrate
those elements into a much more cohesive
00:06:57:12 - 00:06:59:02
look for you.
00:06:59:15 - 00:07:06:23
An example of this might be, many of you I
know might have a really nice classic pair
00:07:06:23 - 00:07:11:06
of pants, like suit pants, that type of
thing.
00:07:11:06 - 00:07:15:11
So thinking about how can you mix those up
with something.
00:07:15:11 - 00:07:18:05
other than what you've been traditionally
wearing it with.
00:07:18:05 - 00:07:23:21
So you may have been wearing it with,
let's say a button down shirt
00:07:23:21 - 00:07:27:13
traditionally, or maybe a blouse.
00:07:27:13 - 00:07:33:12
So maybe swapping those out and going, how
can I now find something that maybe is
00:07:33:12 - 00:07:38:07
dulled down a little bit, maybe a casual
tee or along those lines?
00:07:38:08 - 00:07:43:22
Because by mixing that up, what we wanna
try to do is create a bit of newer
00:07:43:22 - 00:07:44:23
harmony.
00:07:44:23 - 00:07:48:09
and freshness to your outfit.
00:07:48:13 - 00:07:55:23
So, and my third element here for you to
really think about is embracing
00:07:56:08 - 00:07:58:15
experimentation, right?
00:07:58:15 - 00:08:07:09
Don't be afraid to experiment with your
outfit as you move down this path.
00:08:07:15 - 00:08:08:10
So what does that actually mean?
00:08:08:10 - 00:08:10:03
So what does that actually mean?
00:08:10:03 - 00:08:15:12
Look, it can be really scary to try
something new, but...
00:08:15:12 - 00:08:22:07
fashion and your style is supposed to be
fun and it's supposed to be reflective of
00:08:22:07 - 00:08:24:09
your evolving self.
00:08:24:10 - 00:08:29:07
So if you start really small by
incorporating maybe something that's a
00:08:29:07 - 00:08:34:13
little bit different in your wardrobe and
start to see how you feel when you go to
00:08:34:13 - 00:08:41:07
wear it, you know, is it something that in
a bold print maybe it's a leopard or
00:08:41:07 - 00:08:44:23
something a little bit different from what
you would have traditionally worn?
00:08:44:23 - 00:08:51:00
So looking at maybe getting a print that's
quite bold, but in a conservative style
00:08:51:00 - 00:08:54:07
might help to bridge that gap for you.
00:08:54:07 - 00:09:00:13
And again, this is just an example for you
to consider, but you need to find that
00:09:00:13 - 00:09:07:05
little bit of fun back into your wardrobe
as you evolve through that next stage.
00:09:07:14 - 00:09:13:11
You need to trust your gut is my number
four around this.
00:09:13:23 - 00:09:14:07
So,
00:09:14:07 - 00:09:17:03
Why do I say that?
00:09:17:03 - 00:09:23:05
Because time and time again, I've heard
clients pick something that they
00:09:23:05 - 00:09:27:03
absolutely love, but then when they put it
on, they're just not sure.
00:09:27:03 - 00:09:28:20
And they need that second opinion.
00:09:28:20 - 00:09:33:17
And I love being able to provide that to
many of my clients.
00:09:34:07 - 00:09:42:11
When you need that, I want you to think
about, do I feel like mutton dressed up as
00:09:42:11 - 00:09:43:02
lamb?
00:09:43:02 - 00:09:47:21
Do I feel out of sorts and really
uncomfortable?
00:09:47:22 - 00:09:56:11
Or is it that I'm not sure if I can get
away with this because I'm worried how
00:09:56:11 - 00:09:57:23
people might perceive me?
00:09:57:23 - 00:09:59:20
Because that's a little bit different.
00:09:59:20 - 00:10:06:07
Because if you feel incredible in it and
it fits really well and it's hugging in
00:10:06:07 - 00:10:12:01
the right places and it's working for you
from a color perspective and a style.
00:10:12:14 - 00:10:18:02
then it's not necessarily about everybody
else's perception along that journey.
00:10:18:15 - 00:10:25:21
So one of my listeners actually sent in a
bit of a question for me really in
00:10:25:21 - 00:10:28:06
relation to this particular topic.
00:10:28:18 - 00:10:36:18
And her specific question was, hi Sonia,
I'm in my late 40s and I feel stuck in a
00:10:36:18 - 00:10:37:09
rut.
00:10:37:09 - 00:10:46:01
So how can I start to introduce more
appropriate yet stylish pieces into my
00:10:46:01 - 00:10:47:00
wardrobe?
00:10:47:10 - 00:10:50:06
So this is a fantastic question.
00:10:50:06 - 00:10:56:23
So my advice here is to really start by
identifying the key pieces you already
00:10:56:23 - 00:11:01:03
love, and then you start to build from
there because that'll start to be your
00:11:01:03 - 00:11:02:07
foundation.
00:11:02:07 - 00:11:08:08
So you wanna try to inject a little bit
more modern or fresh updates to those
00:11:08:08 - 00:11:09:10
favorites.
00:11:09:10 - 00:11:15:16
So let's take the blazer as an example,
because many of you already own a blazer
00:11:15:16 - 00:11:17:17
that you probably love.
00:11:17:17 - 00:11:17:18
So if you find one and you want to update
it a bit, you might be looking for one in
00:11:17:18 - 00:11:22:23
So if you find one and you want to update
it a bit, you might be looking for one in
00:11:22:23 - 00:11:25:08
maybe a different fabric.
00:11:25:08 - 00:11:29:00
So something with an interesting fabric,
similar to the leopard print example I
00:11:29:00 - 00:11:33:20
talked about before, or perhaps it's a
refresh on the cut.
00:11:33:20 - 00:11:38:13
So maybe it's a different cut to how you
would normally or traditionally wear it.
00:11:38:13 - 00:11:44:23
Maybe it's a colorless blazer, colorless
long line blazer, or maybe it's a crop
00:11:44:23 - 00:11:46:02
style blazer.
00:11:46:02 - 00:11:50:00
maybe it's a blazer in a bit more of a
knit fabric.
00:11:50:02 - 00:11:56:12
That could be a really interesting way of
trying to shift that slightly.
00:11:56:12 - 00:12:00:22
Now, if you want to get more out of that
existing wardrobe, then it might be more
00:12:00:22 - 00:12:08:16
about injecting some accessories to really
refresh the look completely.
00:12:09:03 - 00:12:13:17
I cannot impress on my clients enough the
power of the accessory.
00:12:13:19 - 00:12:22:15
The ability for a piece of jewelry to
completely change the look of an existing
00:12:22:15 - 00:12:23:07
The ability for a piece of jewelry to
completely change the look of an existing
00:12:23:07 - 00:12:29:09
knit and blazer top, anything like that,
is magic really.
00:12:29:09 - 00:12:34:11
And if you can find the right piece, it
will refresh your look without necessarily
00:12:34:11 - 00:12:38:19
having to overhaul your entire wardrobe.
00:12:39:13 - 00:12:40:14
So.
00:12:41:03 - 00:12:48:18
That's all I've got time for today, but
remember that looking for that appropriate
00:12:48:18 - 00:12:53:17
outfit without looking like you're trying
too hard doesn't mean you have to
00:12:53:17 - 00:12:55:20
sacrifice your style at all.
00:12:55:20 - 00:13:00:15
It's about finding balance where you feel
confident and authentic and most
00:13:00:15 - 00:13:05:00
importantly, like you and your personal
brand.
00:13:05:04 - 00:13:09:00

00:13:09:00 - 00:13:09:01
I'd love to hear from you.
00:13:09:10 - 00:13:12:12
Or drop me a DM, I'd love to hear from
you.
00:13:12:12 - 00:13:17:08
Or share it with a friend who might need
that little bit of style inspiration.
00:13:17:08 - 00:13:18:11
Thanks everyone.
